Synopsis[]
Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla sit down together in front of the camera. Hecox recounts how he and Padilla created Smosh's YouTube channel in 2005 as a way to have fun and make each other laugh, which quickly became popular and they were able to make a dream career out of it. However, in 2011, after six years of doing almost everything alone, the workload became unsustainable and they agreed to sell Smosh to Defy Media — which, at the time, was Alloy Digital — who promised to turn it into something special. The quality of their videos improved, and they had opportunities to work on various projects, including movies, comics, livestreams, a magazine, and a mobile game. Padilla explains that the increased workload left him unable to commit to creating the sketches that he considered were what made Smosh unique and decided to leave the company in 2017 to become an independent creator. Hecox continues, recounting how he remained at Smosh, where he felt there was still more to do, but Defy Media went out of business the next year, putting Smosh's future in jeopardy. Rhett & Link acquired Smosh soon after through Mythical Entertainment, ensuring its survival.[1]
Padilla explains that in 2022, he and Hecox started more spending time together and realized the magic they felt when creating sketches together, inspiring them to buy Smosh back. After months of negotiations and contemplation, Hecox and Padilla are able to announce that they now officially own Smosh, accompanied by a brief, silent skit in which they exchange bags of money with Rhett & Link, who give them a briefcase containing a paper containing the channel's password, 1234. They express their excitement about bringing back classic Smosh sketch comedy, written by and starring themselves. Hecox assures viewers that Smosh Pit and Smosh Games, will remain the same, with no changes to content or personnel.[1]
At that moment, Ian's Mom walks in and interrupts to ask if they are almost finished with the video, mocking her son when he answers that they are almost done. She greets Padilla and expresses her fondness for his I Spent a Day With... series before returning to berating Ian, whom she says needs to "spend a day" a personal trainer and calls an "emaciated cuck." As a surprised Hecox wonders how she knows what the word "cuck" means, his mother pushes him and Padilla out of the room, explaining that the streamer xQc, whose last two streams she missed, is live. Outside, Hecox and Padilla reiterate that they are on their own and encourage viewers to support them directly by becoming channel members. Padilla shows his gratitude and anticipation for what lies ahead, and Ian's Mom urges viewers to support the newly independent Smosh, since "[her] dumbass son and his hot friend" wish to continue it indefinitely before slamming the door shut.[1]
The video ends with a black screen with yellow text reading "SMOSH WILL RETURN NEXT WEEK" and white text below it reading "Click join below to support an independent smosh".[1]

Promotion[]
"WE BOUGHT SMOSH!" was released on Smosh's YouTube channel on June 20, 2023. It stars Smosh co-founder Ian Hecox, Anthony Padilla, and Hecox's mother Sharon Hecox.[1] At the end of the final episode of Let's Do This!, uploaded on June 16, Hecox explained that the show was ending for a "very good reason" that something "crazy" would happen on June 20.[2] He reiterated his announcement on Twitter the following day,[3] which Smosh retweeted the same day.[4] Hecox reminded followers of the upcoming event the day before the video's release,[5] and the day after, announced that something would happen at 9:00 AM PST on Smosh's YouTube channel and encouraged viewers to record and send in their reactions to the event.[6] At 9:00 AM PST, Smosh's Twitter account released a teaser consisting of the video's first ten seconds followed by the link to its YouTube channel, accompanied by the "Shut Up!" sound effect.[7] This tweet was pinned to the account.[8] An edited version of the teaser, formatted for vertical screens, was also posted to Smosh's Instagram account.[9]
