Twisted Metal is a 2012 vehicle combat game developed by Eat Sleep Play and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. A reboot of the Twisted Metal game series, players compete in Calypso's tournament to earn their prize. There are only three playable characters in the campaign - Sweet Tooth, Mr. Grimm, and Krista Sparks/Dollface - but each can use any vehicle. The game focuses heavily on multiplayer combat, including various online game modes with up to four-player split-screen and 16 players online. There are a number of game modes, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Endurance, Race, Hunted, Team Hunted, Last Man Standing, and Team Last Man Standing.
Nuke Mode is a new online game mode in which players choose a faction, each having a giant metal statue that is being held in the air by a helicopter, which the opposing team must try to destroy. To destroy these statues, the player must abduct the enemy team's leader, then sacrifice the leader to a missile launcher that will, in turn, launch a nuclear missile. The player who does this has to control it to hit the statue in the air. The team has to repeat this three times before the statue is destroyed. There are four factions: the Clowns, the Dolls, the Skulls, and the Holy Men, inspired by Sweet Tooth, Dollface, Mr. Grimm and the Preacher respectively.
Weapons include the fire, homing, power, and sniper reticle missiles; napalm, remote bomb, shotgun, Ricochet R/C Car, mega guns, and the following sidearms: mounted guns, submachine gun, magnum revolver, sawn-off shotgun, swarmer rockets, laser pistol, 9mm pistol, and grenades.
It was released to generally positive reviews. Reviewers praised the multiplayer and gameplay, but several criticized its story mode, lack of characters compared to earlier installments, and somewhat difficult controls.
