"What? It's that damn neighbor! How'd he get in there?! No! Huh— wha— my flamingo! Where's my flamingo, Anthony?! Ah! THAT DAMN NEIGHBOR!"

That Damn Neighbor, or simply The Neighbor, was a recurring character in the early days of Smosh and the main antagonist of the That Damn Neighbor series. He is played by Brian Rassmussen.

Character

Personality

The Neighbor is the nemesis of Benny Jean. He constantly harasses Benny Jean by stealing the redneck's flamingo and other valuables or staying on Benny's property, such as staying in his new pool and stealing it in the comic, though it shows that he still cares for Benny when he sent a "Get Better Soon" card in the comic. Whenever Benny sees That Damn Neighbor, he yells, "You better stay away from my (noun), my (second noun), and especially my damn pet flamingo!!"

Abilities

The Neighbor seems to have the ability to teleport himself, objects, and even other people and animals on a whim. In "That Damn Neighbor", he is able to summon objects ranging from a football, binoculars, his dog, and even his motorcycle.^[2] In "That Damn Yard Sale", he is able to set up and entire yard sale in an instant,^[3] and in "THAT DAMN PUNISHMENT!", the Neighbor swaps places with Cletus, who is teleported to the rooftop of a nearby house.^[4]

The Neighbor also seems to have some ties to the supernatural. This is hinted at in "That Damn Prison Break", where the Neighbor flies over a freeway to escape Benny Jean and Cletus.^[5] This is expanded on in the end of Smosh Comics Issue 6, where the deceased body of the Neighbor, with the coffin encasing him, appears before Benny Jean and Cletus, scaring the former into the grave and seemingly killing him.^[6]

Appearance

That Damn Neighbor wears sunglasses, a turquoise jacket with lavender lines, orange shorts, and white shoes. He also seems to have magical powers on the dance floor of voodoo dolls and extreme speed or teleportation, which, to Benny's annoyance, can make Benny miss a punch or be unable to hit him.

History

"That Damn Neighbor"

The Neighbor appears next to Benny Jean and Cletus, who are sitting in peace by in the former's front lawn surrounded by a secure fence. Benny Jean uses this to explain to Cletus how the fence protects him and his pet flamingo; however, the Neighbor appears the next moment inside the fence and next to the flamingo, prompting Benny Jean to stand up, get in the Neighbor's face, and threatens him to "scream" before he "kick[s] his keister", apparently scaring the Neighbor away, who watches Benny Jean and Cletus from the other side of the road, sitting on a fire hydrant.^[7]

Sometime later, Benny Jean finishes attaching tacks to the top of the fence to improve its security, but immediately notices the Neighbor standing inside, next to the flamingo. A flabbergasted Benny Jean orders the Neighbor to stay away from his flamingo. The Neighbor strikes a pose of him holding binoculars, prompting Benny Jean to order the Neighbor to not birdwatch near his flamingo; the Neighbor strikes a pose with a football, prompting Benny Jean to order the Neighbor not to play with his football and return it, to which the Neighbor responds by throwing it at Benny Jean, hitting the redneck in the face; the Neighbor strikes a pose on a motorcycle, impressing Benny Jean, who admits that he is more impressed than annoyed; the Neighbor strikes a pose with the flamingo in his arms, prompting Benny Jean to beg him to put the flamingo down. The Neighbor complies, but summons his dog inside the fence, prompting Benny Jean to threaten the Neighbor to not allow his dog to urinate on his flamingo, scaring the Neighbor away.^[8]

It is revealed through a subsequent interaction between Benny Jean and Cletus that the Neighbor likely got in through the fence because of a massive hole Cletus has cut the previous day to allow himself entry.^[9]

"The Assassins"

The Neighbor makes an appearance in the background of a shot of Ian and Anthony escaping an enemy base when Ian turns around to beckon Chief in their direction. The Neighbor sits atop a fire hydrant, holding Benny Jean's pet flamingo. The Neighbor disappears in the following shot of the same area.^[10]

"Replacement Needed"

When Ian looks over T-Bag's shoulder to see if anyone else has shown up to Smosh's new partner auditions, the Neighbor can be seen in the background, sitting in a chair on the sidewalk and holding the flamingo in his arms. Similar to his background cameo in "The Assassins", he disappears in the next shot of that area.^[11]

"Reunited?"

While Ian and T-Bag are shooting a video, Cletus walks by and T-Bag pulls a gun on him. The Neighbor can be seen in the background, leaning against a mailbox.^[12]

"That Damn Yard Sale"

Benny Jean is holding a yard sale and points to a box of green camo shirts for Cletus to browse through, but they notice that the Neighbor is standing next to the flamingo, with the box of camo shirts in his hands. Benny Jean runs over and yells at the Neighbor that he is not welcome anywhere near him, his stuff, and especially his flamingo, and wrestles the box out of the Neighbor's hands, spilling the shirts in the process. As Benny Jean is picking up the clothes and threatening the Neighbor to leave, he notices that he is no longer standing next to the flamingo; that moment, the Neighbor appears on the other side of the yard sale, holding an activated siren. A rather frustrated Benny Jean grabs the siren out of the Neighbor's hand and decides to call the police.^[13]

When Benny Jean hangs up, he and Cletus notice that the Neighbor is now on the other side of the street, holding his own yard sale with all of the same items Benny Jean is selling. Unlike Benny Jean and Cletus, the Neighbor's yard sale actually attracts customers, including Ian and Anthony. Sometime later, Benny Jean leaves Cletus in charge of the yard sale as he tries to get a potential customer's attention; when he returns, Cletus excitedly informs him that he sold his flamingo to the Neighbor, who paid "top dollar" for it, angering Benny Jean into slapping Cletus. After at least a dozen slaps, the Neighbor suddenly appears in what was Cletus's position, taking a slap before Benny Jean realizes what has happened. At that moment, a policeman finally arrives and, witnessing Benny Jean slap the Neighbor, places the redneck under arrest for assault. Benny Jean protests, trying to explain that the Neighbor set him up. The policeman asks the Neighbor if it is true, getting no response, which the policeman thinks is a sign of trauma and drags Benny Jean away.^[14]

After the policeman and Benny Jean away, Cletus proceeds to pester the Neighbor if he is selling any camo shirts, repeatedly poking him in the face. After a few seconds of no reaction, the Neighbor suddenly turns to face Cletus and shouts "Don't f*cking touch me!", causing Cletus to scream.^[15]

"That Damn Prison Break"

After Benny Jean escapes from jail and returns home, he orders Cletus to assist him in getting his flamingo back from the Neighbor, who appears next to them. Benny Jean gets up in the Neighbor's face and threatens to "fry [his] like a possum on a hot summer night" if he does not return the flamingo. The Neighbor does not react, prompting Benny Jean to order Cletus to "fetch [his] beatin' stick", which, in turn, prompts the Neighbor to flee on a segway while giving Benny Jean the middle finger. Because Cletus has sold his friend's Hummer for a fog machine, they are forced to chase after the Neighbor on rollerblades. A chase ensues, and the Neighbor is chased to the freeway, but, to Benny Jean's frustration, the Neighbor continues to drive his segway to a ramp and literally fly over the freeway to safety.^[16]

While the Neighbor is gone, Benny Jean and Cletus return and break into his house to retrieve the flamingo (during which Cletus reveals that he and the Neighbor had been hanging out while Benny Jean was in jail), but Cletus accidentally triggers the laser security system. The two try to flee, but the Neighbor cuts off access from the front and back doors while holding a fireaxe. At that moment, a policeman arrives to investigate the scene, and another chase ensues throughout the house, culminating in the four meeting in the middle of the hallway, where the policeman orders everyone to stop and demands an explanation. Benny Jean explains that the Neighbor has stolen his flamingo and that he was simply trying to get it back. The policeman notes to the Neighbor that stealing flamingos is a federal crime (as is breaking out of jail, as he tells Benny Jean) and drags the two away to prison.^[17]

At the Tallahassee State Prison, Benny Jean is led to his cell, where he meets his new cellmate. Initially unconcerned with being in jail, so long as he has his flamingo, Benny Jean introduces himself to his cellmate, who is reading a newspaper that covers his face. The cellmate dramatically drops the newspaper, revealing himself to be the Neighbor, causing Benny Jean to run to the cell door window and scream for help.^[18]

"THAT DAMN PUNISHMENT!"

By 2010, Benny Jean and, presumably, the Neighbor, are out of prison, but on parole. Benny Jean is ordered by his parole officer to partake in an online video challenge to help the environment. If he refuses, he is returning to prison with the Neighbor, frightening Benny Jean into compliance. When the parole officer leaves, Benny Jean exclaims how much the situation "sucks!" and turns face-to-face with the Neighbor, causing the redneck to panic and flee.^[19]

Sometime later, Cletus arrives to help out, but they notice the Neighbor standing nearby with the camera next to the flamingo. Benny Jean gets up and threatens the Neighbor to leave him alone or else he will wish he was "never born on this side of the Mississippi!", grabbing the camera out of the Neighbor's hands. Later, during recording, Benny Jean tries to use his flamingo as an example of a creature that needs the environment, but notices that it is missing. He sees the Neighbor across the sit, flamingo in his arms and sitting atop a truck. The Neighbor returns it surprisingly quickly, but soon interrupts again when he switches spots with Cletus, sending the hillbilly on top of a rooftop. Benny Jean rushes to slap the Neighbor, who returns Cletus to his original position in time to avoid being slapped.^[20]

Cletus is slapped instead, prompting him to quit and run home, crying. When he jumps into his bed and shout out that he wishes there was someone who cared for him, he feels a hand on his shoulder. Cletus turns his head to look, only to see the Neighbor in bed with him, making him scream.^[21]

"THAT DAMN SHOWER!"

Benny Jean's fan-suggested environmental challenge of this video is to take a cold shower in half a minute while wearing a speedo, which he unenthusiastically tries and completes. When he goes to retrieve his clothing, he notices that the Neighbor is standing at the doorway of the bathroom with the redneck's clothing. An angry Benny Jean grabs a short whip to use on the Neighbor and chases him out the front door, where the Neighbor makes his getaway in the back of a truck. Benny Jean, still in a speedo, gives chase and fruitlessly tries to whip the Neighbor, but fails when he is forced to stop and catch his breath. When Benny Jean returns to Cletus to complain about the Neighbor, he also notes how his crotch feels weird in a speedo, Cletus glances at his friend's crotch region, where he sees the Neighbor's face instead, to his terror.^[22]

"THAT DAMN RAP MUSIC!"

Benny Jean is tasked with making a music video promoting environmentally-friendly behavior, but recording is interrupted when the Neighbor appears, holding a radio that is blasting "Jarabe Tapatío". As usual, Benny Jean threatens him to stay away. Later, when recording is nearly finished, Benny Jean notices that his flamingo is missing. He stands up to begin searching for it, but comes face-to-face with the Neighbor, who is holding the flamingo by the neck in his mouth, a sight that makes Benny Jean scream.^[23]

"THAT DAMN TRASH PILE!"

Benny Jean is tasked with creating an eco-friendly house for his flamingo out of trash, which he does by simply dumping his trash into a pile on top of his flamingo. Cletus runs over to check it out, impressed by it. At that moment, the Neighbor sits up from beneath the trash pile, scaring Cletus into screaming.^[24]

"Wii U Sports is Awesome!"

The Neighbor can be seen in Mii form in the background of the "Boxing" portion, seated in the far right of the audience, fifth row from the bottom.^[25] He also appears in the audience of the "Gladiator" arena behind the four heads on spikes,^[26] on the far left in the background of "Mud Wrestling",^[27] and the background of "Juggling" in the shot of Billy Hamburger's mother and grandfather's Miis getting killed by chainsaws.^[28]

"HOLY CRAP! 2 BILLION VIEWS!"

The Neighbor is serving as the cameraman for an action movie directed by Seymour Tantz, with Boxman holding the clipboard and Sharon Hecox holding the boom mic.^[29] The Neighbor later appears in the background in the couch behind Benny Jean and Cletus, who laugh at George Zazz getting struck by Pikachu's Thundershock.^[30]

"THAT DAMN MOVIE!"

In 2013, the Neighbor is still pestering Benny Jean. When Anthony enters the redneck's house and nearly trips over the flamingo, Benny Jean appears with a crossbow aimed at him and orders him to step away from the flamingo. After Anthony explains why he is there (to partner up for a film competition), the Neighbor appears with the flamingo in his arms, prompting Benny Jean to once again threaten him to leave, or else he will "turn [his] keister into a football and kick it out than a wolf in a chicken coop!", scaring the Neighbor away. The Neighbor soon returns, however, having moved a bear trap to where Benny Jean steps, causing his leg to become stuck. The Neighbor steals the flamingo, causing Benny Jean to plead with the Neighbor not to "bear trap" his flamingo. He limps over and grabs the bird back, crying at the Neighbor to leave him alone.^[31]

At the film competition, Benny Jean had replaced his and Anthony's film with his own of self-defense techniques against people who try to steal pet flamingos, complete with a dummy dressed like the Neighbor that gets pummelled by the redneck. However, to Benny Jean's shock and horror, the Neighbor seemingly invades the video through occasional clips of him standing in a backyard striking various poses, including ominously standing still, standing with his arms on his hips, standing with his arms on his chest, standing with the flamingo (which has disappeared from Benny Jean's arms), kissing the flamingo, holding the flamingo in various ways, and finally a shot of is back, with the Neighbor turning to face the camera with the flamingo. Benny Jean stands up, shouts out "That Damn Neighbor!" while waving double fists, and runs out of the theater.^[32]

On the drive home, Ian and Anthony enjoy their shared prize pizza when they realize that neither of the are driving the car; rather, the Neighbor, still holding the flamingo, is in the driver's seat. Having seen the Neighbor in action, the two scream as the Neighbor crashes the car, seemingly killing them all. At the site of the crash, the Neighbor ominously stands behind the car with the flamingo in his arms, flashing a quick smile before the video ends.^[33]

The Neighbor's smiling face is flashed at the video's outro, scaring Benny Jean, who was narrating.^[34]

"THE GREAT BIG WHEEL RACE! (Smosh Babies #8)"

A baby version of the Neighbor can be seen with the flamingo watching Baby Anthony and Lenny race in the sandy area of the playground, where Anthony gets stuck. A shine in his sunglasses suggests that the Neighbor is to blame for Anthony getting stuck.^[35]

"ASSASSIN'S CREED 4 ROCK ANTHEM"

The Neighbor can be seen in the background of one shot in the tavern Edward Kenway and Blackbeard are singing in, dressed in pirate attire and holding the flamingo in his arms.^[36] He can be seen again later, showing that his attire is simply a red vest and white frills over his normal blue and pink wardrobe.^[37]

"GUY'S GUIDE TO BEING MANLY"

Anthony dressed up like the Neighbor, complete with the coat, sunglasses, and flamingo, as a demonstration of a "manly" dance.^[38]

"IF VIDEO GAMES WERE REAL 4"

In the segment based on Five Nights at Freddy's, the Neighbor can be seen standing with the flamingo in his arms in the hallway in the left monitor.^[39]

At the end of "That Damn Yard Sale," when Cletus was poking the neighbor's face to get his attention, he quickly turned to Cletus and said, "Don't f**king touch me!," making a startled Cletus scream. This was the first time the neighbor broke his silence.
- The neighbor also broke his silence in Food Battle: The Game, as he's the guy who manages challenge mode.
While not actually an appearance, Anthony dresses up as him in Guy's Guide to Being Manly.
His ability to seemingly appear out of nowhere, and his habit of standing near motionless is comparable to Slenderman.
His tendency to appear in the end credits is also done by Molester Moon.
