Synopsis[]

Inside the Spud Hut, a memorial service takes place for the recently deceased Spud Hut employee, Carmie. Tater comments on how it’s weird to have the funeral in the restaurant, considering Carmie only worked there for “like, two months, tops.”

After asking how Carmie died, Jerry directs Tater to the Coroner, who informs them that he got into a gunfight with a man named Jerry Patrick. The Coroner clarifies that the gunfight was a draw resulting in no deaths, leading Carmie to commit suicide by swallowing multiple types of pills and his gun’s bullets. The gunfight occurred inside the Spud Hut restaurant.

Jerry asks the Coroner to leave so that they can open the shop. The Coroner says that their shop is failing, claiming Tater told her so. She also says that they have a chance to redeem themselves at the upcoming Potato State Fair. The Coroner is a judge and specifies that in order to win the $100,000 prize, they must submit a potato that they’ve never made before. Tater convinces Jerry to enter the competition in order to pay their mortgage and save the Spud Hut.

A customer, Aunt Carolyn, is seen attempting to order wine. Tater suggests a wine spud for the state fair. She tells Aunt Carolyn that they’re going to get their liquor license.

Later, Barney enters the Spud Hut to talk to Tater, the two of whom are casually dating after meeting on Christian Mingle, though both were on the website as a joke. Barney, a sign spinner for Aubergines & Jeans, tells Tater that he’s been really focused on his career and thinks that they should end things. Along with this, Barney believes himself to be a better and faster sign spinner than Tater, taking credit for moves that Tater taught him. The two fight, and after Tater refuses to give Barney a ride to an appointment later that day, Barney leaves.

A sign spinner for The Yam Yurt named Michael walks into the Spud Hut as Jerry is recommending new ideas to win the contest. Jerry and Michael talk about how empty the mall has been, and how it has been impacting their businesses. Michael asks Jerry for help figuring out what’s been happening to all the customers. Jerry and Tater refuse, prompting Michael to ask why. They tell him about the contest and grand prize at the Potato State Fair. To prove that yams are the ultimate tuber, Michael declares that his shop will enter the competition and win.

Two employees from the Potato Palace enter the Spud Hut, antagonizing Jerry and Tater. Tater asks if Jerry knows the “gay sailor,” which enrages Peter and Frite, who state that Peter is not gay. It’s revealed that Jerry knows Peter, as they attended the same high school and took culinary arts together.

Peter taunts Jerry, saying that the size of the Potato Palace’s potatoes will win them the state fair. Jerry, on the other hand, says that it’s not the size of the potato, but the toppings that matter. While they argue, Michael returns to the Spud Hut. Michael starts a fight with Frite, though it ends quickly.

During the chaos, Tater, who has been sharing odd glances with Frite, sniffs the fellow sign spinner. Tater admires how Frite was able to take the sign out of Michael’s hands. Frite tells Tater that she can do hard things.

After everyone leaves, Jerry admits to Tater that the workload is too much for just the two of them, and that a replacement for Carmie is needed. Seconds later, Augustus comes into the Spud Hut and orders one of everything. Jerry hires him on the spot.
