The Smosh Family in 2024
The Smosh Family (or the Smosh Fam) is the term used to describe the entirety of the regular Smosh cast members. The name originated from the group's tendency to refer to themselves as a family and is currently used both by fans and Smosh itself alike.
Beginning with its' founders, the cast grew to include the Smosh Games Crew and the Smosh Squad; however, once both terms became obsolete due to the transition of eras, every new member added afterwards was due for the ensemble directly, rather than a specific group.
Below is a list of all current and former Smosh Family members, with differentiation between full-time employees and freelance hires. This list includes Anthony Padilla, who co-owns the company but has chosen to limit his on-camera appearance[1], and thus could be considered mostly non-cast.
Including founders Ian and Anthony, the current Smosh Family line-up consists of 15 people.
History[]
Increasing the Family[]
Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla founded the Smosh Youtube channel on November 19, 2005.[2]
On April 23, 2011, Mari Takahashi officially joined the Smosh Family, hosting the show Smosh Pit Weekly on the IanH channel.
Smosh Games cast - the Smosh Games Crew[]
On September 26, 2012, ClevverGames (of Defy Media) officially joined[3] with Smosh to create the gaming-focused channel Smosh Games, adding David "Lasercorn" Moss, Joshua "Jovenshire" Ovenshire, and Matthew Sohinki to the Smosh Family. Having appeared in Smosh Games videos starting in 2013[4], Amra "FlitZ" Ricketts and Wesley "Wes" Johnson were inducted into the Smosh Family on October 12, 2014.[5]
Smosh 2nd Channel cast - the Smosh Squad[]
After appearing throughout sketches starting December 2014[6], on March 13, 2015[7], Keith Leak Jr., Noah Grossman, and Olivia Sui joined the overall Smosh ensemble, originally meant to be part of the regular acting talent in Smosh videos. On July 17[8], that group was further developed to include two additional members: Courtney Miller[9], who appeared in a few sketches beforehand, and Shayne Topp, who debuted in Smosh Summer Games 2015.
More Talent Hiring[]
Ericka "Boze" Bozeman joined the Smosh family at Smosh Winter Games: Again! in February 2017, and Damien Haas began appearing in videos since March; the two were inducted on August 4, 2017, and joined as part of the Smosh Games channel. Their way of induction was similiar to that of past members, via a video; however, that video, titled: "FAN FICTION INDUCTION" , has since been privatized (but can still be accessed via the WayBack Machine).
Departures and Defy Collapse[]
Anthony's Departure[]
On June 14, 2017, both Smosh[10] and Anthony[11] officially announced his departure from the company. In his personal announcement, Anthony claimed to be working on developing his own channel further and making future content independently, which would eventually evolve into his popular interviewing series, 'I Spent a Day With...'.
Shifts in Smosh Games[]
Two months later, on August 5, 2017, both Lasercorn[12] and Sohinki[13] confirmed on their personal Youtube channels that they were becoming part-time members of Smosh Games (and thus appearing less frequently in content), with Lasercorn appearing in more videos than Sohinki, whose last video was premeditated to the shutdown.
On January 4, 2018, in order to legally combat accusations of sexual assault by several women on social media, while not wanting to "risk having a negative impact" on Smosh Games (and Smosh as a whole), Flitz left Smosh with immediate effect.[14]
As revealed in the eleventh episode of the SmoshCast podcast, Joven and Mari both became freelancers on May 1, 2018, but continued to regularly appear in Smosh Games videos, with their departure from Defy Media never announced. Meanwhile, new cast members, including Kimmy Jimenez, began to appear in Smosh sketches[15], in an attempt to gradually introduce the audience to the new cast members.
Shutdown & Temporary Homelessness[]
On November 6, 2018, Defy Media announced[16] the immediate closure of the company, meaning all employees of Defy (and thus Smosh) were now unemployed.
Whilst Ian, the Smosh Squad, and Damien continued to make videos for Smosh, no members of the Smosh Games Crew appeared in any of the videos, continuing to work on their personal channels and other projects. The production delievered at the time was in the form of homemade formats made up of simple ideas, filmed and edited on Courtney's iPhone. Examples included are "WE INVADED IAN'S HOUSE", "WE TRY TO DRAW EACH OTHER FROM MEMORY", and "6 PEOPLE IN A TINY CAR - JACK IN THE BOX MUKBANG".
At the same time, Smosh and Smosh Pit continued uploading pre-shutdown material. Examples included are "GUY FLAWLESS (Dude Perfect Parody)", "Courtney and Shayne Open Up - 2 TRUTHS 1 LIE", and "Try Not To Laugh Challenge 43 w/ The Bath Boys". Smosh Games was unable to be reached, and thus wasn't used for any new uploads.
On January 12, 2019, Boze announced that she was seeking new job opportunities and was leaving YouTube, and thus Smosh. However, she returned soon thereafter to stream on Twitch, with an eventual transferral back to Youtube, now with her own channel focused on true crime.[17]
Acquisition by Mythical and Further Additions[]
Rebuilding the Family & the Smosh Games Channel[]
On February 22, 2019, it was announced that Rhett & Link's company, Mythical Entertainment, had acquired Smosh.
As part of this move to Mythical, Ian, Courtney, Shayne, and Damien became the main cast members of Smosh, while Olivia, Keith, and Noah took on a recurring role. Nearly all other employees -- including directors, writers, and editors; alongside other staffers -- returned to work for Smosh.[18]
On April 10, Smosh Games relaunched, with the Smosh Games Crew and the Smosh Squad joining together so only the Smosh Family existed. Mari and Lasercorn returned to relaunch the Smosh Games channel, while Wes and Joven confirmed they would become part-time members and appear less frequently in Smosh content.
Gradually Introducing New Faces[]
Kimmy was the only member of the cast hired before Defy's closure to return to Smosh, taking part in Smosh Summer Games: Apocalypse, being confirmed as a member of the Smosh Family on March 20, 2020[19]. At the same time, Sarah Whittle, Matt Raub, Tommy Bowe, and Spencer Agnew began appearing in more Smosh content as well as working as crew, with Sarah taking part in HALLOWEEN JUST DANCE 2020.
On March 4, 2020, Mari, Joven, Lasercorn, Sohinki, Flitz, and Wes reunited to form New Element Six, implying that they had all officially left Smosh, but Mari continued to appear in some videos throughout early 2020.
After appearing in multiple videos starting December 2019[20], on May 22, 2020[21], Jacklyn Uweh was inducted into the Smosh Family.
On June 5, 2020, Mari confirmed[22] on her Twitch stream that she had left Smosh to focus on New Element Six and her personal channel. On June 26, NE6 seemed to come to a close. Following a statement made by Wes regarding allegations against him, Mari, Lasercorn, and Joven all came forward with the news that they each were going to step away from New Element Six, and focus on their own projects. The last video on the NE6 channel was uploaded on June 24, 2020. Mari, Lasercorn, Joven, and Sohinki have since reunited with OGSoG, a podcast that they hosted together until late 2024[23].
Having previously appeared as a guest in several Smosh Games videos and Twitch streams, on December 15, 2020, Ify Nwadiwe was officially confirmed to be a member of Smosh, in a collaborative video where he represented Smosh Games (alongside Damien). His role within the Smosh Family was temporary, with Ify leaving at some point in May 2021, only returning for later, sporadic appearances.
On April 2, 2021, Saige Ryan was officially inducted[24] into the Smosh Family, having previously guest-starred in several Twitch streams.
On May 4, 2021, it was officially announced on the SmoshCast that Sarah was leaving Smosh.
Behind-the-Scenes Reunion[]
Around 2022, unbeknownest to the public, Ian and Anthony began seeing each-other again. After Ian's friend, Diana (fellow Youtuber thephysicsgirl), reached to out with an invite for lunch[25], Anthony (with the support of his partner, Mykie) decided to reconnect with him. The two conversed about their time together as friends, reminicing about Smosh whilst slowly mending their friendship.[26]
The idea of starting a new Youtube channel arose, suggested by then-Pressalike Productions CEO Alessandra Catanese, but the conversation quickly evolved to another idea: buying Smosh back.[27]
All the while, Ian was heavily concerned about the state of Smosh. According to him, Smosh Main didn't quite find its' footing, causing low views; enough to trouble the company. Beginning to consider an outcome, he raised the idea of buying Smosh back[26]. Anthony immediately agreed, and two met with Mythical Entertainment owners Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal in order to find the proper way to go about this proposal.[28]
New Cast Hiring & Old Faces Returning[]
After appearing in several scripted videos since April of 2020, Amanda Lehan-Canto began appearing in Smosh Pit and Smosh Games videos, being confirmed[source?] as a member of the Smosh Family on March 24, 2022. In August, Chanse McCrary, Angela Giarratana, Arasha Lalani, Matt Fox, and Daniel Stonewall were added as temporary cast members, with only the first three becoming permanent cast members[29]. Amanda and Angela later went on to become full-time employees.
Having not appeared with Smosh since June 2022 (at Vidcon), Saige confirmed her departure from Smosh on a since-deleted Instagram post in October.[30]
In 2023, Ify[31], Sarah[32], and Mari[33] returned as guests in various videos. Also in January, Kimmy became the Associate Producer on Smosh Pit[34], leading to her being featured less in videos, and virtually being demoted from the cast.
Return to Independence[]
On June 20, 2023, it was announced that Anthony was returning to Smosh and that he and Ian had bought Smosh from Mythical Entertainment (though the company does still maintain a minority stake in Smosh Inc.[35]). Whilst the duo were reuniting on the Smosh Main channel, the other members of the Smosh Family remained with Smosh, later integrating into the sketches; though that formality eventually faded, with the channel transforming back into an ensemble-helmed collective the year afterwards.
On August 23, 2023, Jackie announced her departure from Smosh to join the inaugural mainstage cast of The Second City in New York City.
On January 1, 2024, after years of making various guest appearances on Smosh Pit and Smosh Games, Trevor Evarts from the Mythical Kitchen was confirmed[36] to be a member of the Smosh Family whilst retaining his role as a culinary producer for Mythical.
In March 2024, Kimmy announced that she left Smosh.
On June 20, 2024, Spencer and Tommy's photos were included in an announcement by Ian and Anthony on the Smosh main channel video We Need To Tell You Something, alongside all other Smosh Family members. Despite that, they have been an unofficial part of the cast for years beforehand[37], and thus cannot be considered as fully new additions.

- Nearly all current and former members officially reside in Los Angeles, California with only Mari and Jackie being the only official members living outside of it.
- Mari and her husband later moved to Las Vegas, NV[65], while Jackie moved to New York City shortly after her departure to become part of The Second City New York's inaugural cast[66].
- Mari was the first Smosh Family member other than Ian or Anthony to be introduced. She is also the only newer, Defy-era member who didn't originally join as a part of the Smosh Games Crew or the Smosh Squad.
- In keeping with this, Mari was initially sometimes known as "the third member" of Smosh.
- Though most of the cast met one another after being hired by Smosh, many of the later cast members knew each other before working there.
- Joven, Lasercorn, Sohinki, Flitz, and Wes met while working at YouTube content brand MahaloGames[67]. Joven, Lasercorn and Sohinki left Mahalo to work for ClevverGames, before they were hired together by Ian and Anthony to form Smosh Games[68]; Flitz and Wes both joined Smosh behind the scenes at around the same time[source?] and were later assimilated into the main cast.

- Coincidentally, the first three are from the original Smosh Games lineup, while Wes was part of the subsequent lineup and Sarah, Kimmy and Amanda are from the overall Smosh Family lineup, and Shayne and Courtney were from the original Smosh Squad, meaning by default that the only original Smosh Games member to be unmarried is Sohinki.
- As well as being the first to get married, Lasercorn was also the first member to both become a parent and to have a second child. Flitz and Joven became parents in 2020 and 2022, respectively.[source?]

- Many of the Smosh Ensemble have nicknames or alternative names they go.
- Prior to 2017, it seemed to be an unwritten rule that all Smosh Games members had to use some kind of nickname as their online persona. The first member to join who wasn't known as something other than their given name was Damien.
- Mari and Wes's names still apply to this rule, as they use nicknames for their online work rather than their full first names. However, they are unique among the first seven Smosh Games members for using a shortened version of their first names as a nickname, though both have used longer online names in the past.
- None of the original Smosh Squad members use nicknames on a regular basis. However, later addition members do.
- Kimmy, Jackie, and Tommy all use shortened versions of their first names.
- Spencer, Chanse, and Anthony also technically all go by their middle names (Charles, Samuel, and Daniel, respectively).
- Both Amanda and Arasha go by their stage names.
- Amanda's stage name includes her surname (Lehan) hyphenated with her mother's maiden name (Canto).
- Arasha's stage name is mononymous, going by first name alone.
- Prior to 2017, it seemed to be an unwritten rule that all Smosh Games members had to use some kind of nickname as their online persona. The first member to join who wasn't known as something other than their given name was Damien.

- Spencer has 2 sisters.[source?]
- Wes and Courtney are both one of 7 children.
- Flitz apparently has several half-siblings.[source?]

- Angela has one younger brother.[84]
- Chanse has at least 2 younger siblings: a brother and sister.[85]
