Mythical Entertainment is an entertainment and production company, lifestyle brand, and creative collective, co-founded by Internet personalities and comedians Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal of Rhett & Link. It was the parent company of Smosh from 2019 to 2023.
History[]
Following the fall of Defy Media in November 2018, Mythical Entertainment bought Smosh in February 2019, and officially became its new parent company. Beginning in 2019, the Smosh Family worked out of the Mythical offices, and the cast and crew had been vocal regarding their love of their new space, commenting repeatedly on how Mythical gave Smosh the creative freedom that Defy Media never provided, solely because Mythical was a company created to work with the creators, rather than push an agenda of "money first".
Under Mythical, Smosh focused on their active YouTube channels and released new merchandise periodically via the Smosh Store, contrary to the numerous side ventures Smosh had undertaken during Defy's ownership. As a result of greater creative freedom, Smosh launched its first podcast, the SmoshCast, also in February 2019. In February 2020, Smosh embarked on its first tour titled Try Not To Laugh Live!, touring across five major cities on the U.S. West Coast. On September 2, 2020, Smosh began streaming on Twitch under the Smosh Games brand, a venture which lasted until early 2022.
In early 2022, Smosh moved into their present, 17,372-square-foot, content studio and headquarters in Los Angeles, custom-built by Mythical, that includes an open office area, two soundstages, a streaming/gaming studio, a workshop for its art department, formal meeting rooms, and a kitchen area.[1]
During the latter part of Mythical's ownership, Smosh appointed Daniel Tibbets as its first CEO in 2021, [2] and Joel Rubin as its EVP of Programming and Content in mid-2022. [3] On May 4, 2022, Smosh entered into a partnership with American cable channel and network, G4, that enabled them to syndicate their YouTube videos on the network as a way of attracting new audiences and expanding the reach of their IP. This lasted until October when G4 announced the cessation of their operations. On June 30, 2022, Smosh began broadcasting paid live-streamed specials through Kiswe with Smosh: Under The Influence.
On June 20, 2023, it was announced that Mythical sold Smosh back to its co-founders, Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, while the company retained a minority stake. Rhett and Link continued to be involved in an advisory capacity, while Tibbets and Rubin exited the company. This move resulted in Smosh becoming an independent company for the first time in 11 years after they were acquired by Alloy Digital, the precursor to Defy, in 2011. [4]
