Hey Mucho, I just wanted to check in after the forum to Discussions migration, see if everything went smoothly or if there are perhaps some posts that are giving you pause.
Additionally, I wanted to ask you if we could have a conversation about the "future" of the <tabview> tags. As you know better than me, those tags are used on a few pages on the wiki, but they may pose a problem with UCP around the corner. While those tags will initially be ported over, their support will be temporary. As such, we're going around to work with communities to find a workable solution to get rid of those tags so the community doesn't end up with broken pages.
Looking thought the pages, I think we could perhaps just delete the tags from all the year pages (2015, 2016, etc) as most of those pages don't have any content save for empty headings. For the tabview tags used on the list pages, I was hoping we could talk about different alternatives, see how you and the other admins would like to change those tags there. Hope to hear back from you soon about this.
What about the tabview tags is incompatible with the upcoming UCP?
Do you know of any alternative method of displaying pages onto other pages exactly as the tabview tags do for "Year" and "List of [...] videos" pages?
Regarding Forums --> Discussions, yeah, everything seemed to go smoothly. Smosh Wiki has a semi-active social side, and nothing is collapsing, crashing, burning, and shouting "My leg!" in the background, so I think things are fine in that regard.
Glad to know the Forum/Discussions migration went smoothly!
To answer your questions about tabview tags: Most reasons against using tabview are outlined on this Best Practice blog (that page also explores alternatives along with the advantages and drawbacks). The deprecation effort of tabview has gone from being a Best Practice to being a technical necessity in a very short time. As this community prepares for UCP, we just know that the pages using those tabs will break outright if changes are not made prior to migration.
I reckon the only way to have something that reproduces the same layout as the tabview had, is to create a template and some css coding supporting it.
Hi, I've tested a new format on List of SmoshCast videos where I am using Tabber and the Main Template to link back to the original article. Will this work after UCP and make? If so, I;ll get started on converting the year pages and the other List of pages :)
Eh. The whole point of using the 'tabview' tags was to not have to add new videos to each individual page that features large lists.
Perhaps a template could be made that can be used with the 'tabber' tags? The only thing that would have to be updated is the template, which would contain the list itself, and the rest of the magic happens as normal.
I've had a little play with the List of SmoshCast videos so it is templates for each year in a tabber. That way, we can do the same thing with the year pages (just tabber with Smosh channel videos of each year).
I wasn't sure if we would be keeping the individual list of videos per year pages or not so currently including the main article link. I can remove that if you think it'd be better to delete the 'per year' pages, meaning we'd only have to edit the template each time there is a new video?
Maybe not delete, just turn them into a redirect to preserve page history. But yeah, that's kind of what I was imagining, having a single template that we use as the table for each page that lists videos.
On another note, maybe a little CSS magic can be done to make the tabber tabs look more organic (for lack of a better word), because the current tabber tabs just look tacky in comparison to the tabview tabs.
Hey Mucho, how have you been? I just wanted to alert you to an upcoming change. As you know, Fandom is slowly migrating its wikis to the UCP platform. This move involves the deprecation of the forums in favor of Discussions as elaborated on in this blog post. Since this wiki still uses forums quite actively, this will affect this wiki as well. In the end, only the platform will change, as all threads on forum will be ported over to Discussions, where people can continue to discuss the franchise.
You will notice the appearance of a banner on the wiki that will indicate the move. At the time of the migration, the Forums will be put into a read-only state as the content is migrated automatically. Discussions will be open during and after the migration.
After the migration, you, the other admins, and discussion moderators may want to check the Discussion boards out to properly set up a categorization structure. If you have any questions in regards to this or need any help setting things up, please let me know. I'll be happy to supply or find an answer for you!
Hey Mucho! I'm Lostris, and I am the Wiki Manager assigned to the Smosh Wiki; I will be taking over from Kylara as part of on internal switch. No worries, just like here, I am not here to take over. As she noted before, our job is to help the community on a more local leven and serve as an easy to reach liaison between contributors and full-time Fandom staff. As such, I will be your primary point of contact should any assistance be needed, so if you ever have a question or issue relating to the wiki, editing, etc., don't hesitate to leave a message on my wall and I will do my best to help. If I am unable to solve your issue, I will be able to get in contact with a staff member that can. Aside from assisting this community with any possible issues you may have, I am also here to help you out with the fun stuff, so if you have an idea or fun project that you don't quite know how to get off the ground or that you feel could use a little bit more Fandom love, do not hesitate to reach out and pitch me your idea! I will also be getting in contact with the rest of the admins in this community to introduce myself and inform them of my position.
Additionally, I want to congratulate you and the rest of this community on keeping this wiki going for so long! Coming Wednesday, this wiki will be blowing out twelve candles! That's an amazing achievement of which you may all be extremely proud! I look forward to getting to know you and working together with this community!
Things seem to be good. Smosh isn't as big as they were a few years ago, but they still seem to be doing pretty well for themselves, and I think Smosh Wiki is in a similar state. Gusey1397 has been doing an awesome job keeping things here up to date.
Hi again! Checking in to see how things are going. I'm also letting communities know about a couple more things. 2019 was a big year for Fandom, and you can check out the staff blog post This Year at Fandom - 2019.
You might have noticed that some wikis are showing new video content. The new video series, called The Loop, will have new videos weekly and will be replacing the old featured videos that were placed at the top of some wiki pages. Read more about it in the Community Central staff blog post An Update on the Future of Featured Video.
Hope you're doing well, and let me know if you have any questions!
Hello! My name is Kylara , and I'm the Fandom Wiki Manager for Smosh Wiki, so I'm going around introducing myself to the active admin here. I'm here to help the community and be a liaison to full-time Fandom staff. If you ever have any questions or issues relating to the wiki, editing, layout, design, templates, or anything of the sort, please contact me on my message wall!
I'm going around to let communities know about a couple things. The first is a new feature called Global Taxonomy, which will better personalize wiki recommendations for you and visitors. People who would be interested in your wiki content will be better able to find it, and it will help you discover content that’s interesting and relevant to you. You can read more about in the Community Central staff blog post Introducing Global Taxonomy.
I agree that Sarah should be listed as part-time, as Gusey said. Regarding her "induction" date, leave it blank. It was several months after Damien and Boze's first appearances for their official induction video to be released, but before it was obvious that they were cast members to stay.
