Matthew Robert "Matt" Patrick (born November 15, 1986), also known as MatPat, is an American internet personality and actor. He is best known as the creator and narrator of the YouTube series Game Theory, where he makes videos on the logic, scientific accuracy, and lore of various video games and the gaming industry, and of Film Theory, a spin-off show focused on the logic of cinema and internet filmography. In 2015, he created one of YouTube's first live gaming channels, GTLive, and in 2016, he created the YouTube Red series MatPat's Game Lab, a show aimed at replicating video game scenarios in real life.
MatPat has collaborated with Smosh on a few occasions. His first appearance was on Button Bash and he would later appear on Madden Rivals, Gamer Fights, and in two episodes of Game Bang with his wife Stephanie Patrick. MatPat also appeared in the premiere episode of You Posted That? and was the first guest to appear on SmoshCast. On the opposite side of the coin, Ian has appeared on an episode of GTLive alongside his then-girlfriend Pam, and Mari, Flitz, Lasercorn, Jovenshire and Sohinki all appeared in various episodes of MatPat's Game Lab.
History[]
Matthew Patrick grew up as an only child in Ohio. After graduating from Duke University with a double major in theater and neuroscience, MatPat and his then-girlfriend Stephanie moved to New York City so he could pursue a career in acting, which he eventually quit due to financial frustrations. In April 2011, MatPat uploaded the promotional trailer for Game Theory after two years of near-total unemployment. Four days later, he uploaded the first episode, explaining the scientific accuracy of the time-traveling mechanic in the SNES game Chrono Trigger.
The lineup of The Game Theorists would eventually come to include Game Exchange (later Culture Shock), Digressing & Sidequesting, Crossover, A Brief History, Smash History, DeadLock, Break Down, and The SCIENCE! Of.... To begin with, the only show on new channel The Film Theorists was Film Theory, but it later came to include shows like Did You Know Movies?, Frame by Frame, and Film Legends. In 2016, Matt launched his YouTube Red series "MatPat's Game Lab", a show based on the concept of what various video games, would be like when experienced in real life.
MatPat proposed to Stephanie in 2010 and they married in May 2012. They currently reside in Los Angeles, California, with their son Oliver (born July 2018) and their cat Skip.
In January 2024, MatPat has announced his retirement from the channels he created, with others taking over. first four channels are The Game Theorists, The Film Theorists, The Food Theorists and The Style Theorists, he ended them in March, and GTLive ended them in October.
In July 2024, MatPat would continue to pursue creative projects, He also launched LoreFi, a lo-fi music series with mystery content.

- On January 24, 2019, MatPat released a video on his main channel, "They stole $1.7 million", that served as an update on what had happened to him and Stephanie after the shutdown of Defy Media. In the video, he showed two clips from Smosh's update video, "Smosh is Homeless", and Anthony's update video, "My thoughts about SMOSH/Defy Media shutting down", respectively.
- During the punishment segment of MATPAT HIRES SMOSH GAMES!, Stephanie mentioned that MatPat took four years of advanced Latin and ballroom dancing (much to Joven's relief).
