James Charles (born May 23, 1999) is an American Internet personality and makeup artist. He also runs a beauty-oriented YouTube channel with over 16 million subscribers. In 2016, he became the first male spokesmodel for cosmetics brand CoverGirl.
In 2019, he became involved in a controversy with a longtime collaborator of his, Tati Westbrook, in which she posted a video heavily criticizing Charles and accusing him of disloyalty and using his fame and power to toy with others' emotions and sexuality. As a result, Charles lost well over 1 million subscribers until he posted a response and apology video. The controversy itself launched discussion surrounding Internet cancel culture and profits made from online drama.
James Charles is parodied as "James Charges", who posts videos of himself plugging in various electronic devices to charge their batteries, including a smartphone, laptop, wireless headphones, and a purple vibrator. In reference to the aforementioned controversy, the video shows a parodied clip of Tati Westbrook (played by Courtney Miller), who complains how it is "disgusting" how Charles uses his fame and power to charge these devices when she feels that she has devices in similar need of charging.
