On Board AF we revisit one of our favorite board games - Sheriff of Nottingham! Everything goes according to plan until Joven comes up with a bit that all of us soon won't forget... even though we definitely want to.
Each player starts with a variety of goods (cards) worth a certain amount of points. The object of the game is to get as many as possible into town to "sell" and to therefore have the most money at the end. The goods are either legal or contraband, with contraband goods being worth more.
Players take turns being the titular Sheriff of Nottingham; on that turn, their own goods are not in play. The other players choose goods to put in their "bags" (mini-envelopes) to take to town. They must declare what is in their bag to the sheriff, pretending that they are carrying no contraband even if they are. The Sheriff can then choose whether or not to check their bags, although the merchant can offer a bribe in exchange for not checking. If the Sheriff checks the bag and there was contraband, the merchant pays them a penalty equal to the value of all contraband in the bag. However, if the bag only has legal goods, the Sheriff must pay the merchant the value of all goods within. The unchecked players then collect the value of their wares from the bank.
After the last round, bonuses are awarded to the players who smuggled the most of each good - chickens, apples, and bread. After those bonuses have been added to the players' cash sums, the player with the most cash wins.
