"Inverted Gravity" was a 2002 Smosh.com article submitted by the website's Staff member Stephen under the username "CrazyMPSmosh." It was published on November 14, 2002 in the Movie Scripts category, where it served as a film pitch — allegedly based on a true story involving Stephen and his friends — in which a group of friends at a restaurant experience gravity reversing, allowing them to walk and interact on the ceiling. The article was lost by September 16, 2006, when Smosh.com owner Anthony Padilla's computer hard drive failed and all Smosh.com content was lost.

Synopsis[]

AA group of friends — including Nehpets, Nai, Nayr, and Ynohtna — are visiting a restaurant where they laugh as they eat tacos and drink Kool-Aid. Gravity suddenly reverses, sending the group flying to the ceiling, where Nai lands on a ceiling fan and gets chopped to pieces. Nehpets remarks that he thinks it is cool that they can walk on the ceiling, which another friend agrees with, after which the camera circles around the group. A restaurantgoer panics, yelling and running out the restaurant's door, where the reversed gravity pulls him off Earth and into space.[1]

The camera returns to Nehpets and his friends, during which they simultaneously say "Dude" in an annoying monotone voice and grab and eat some fries. Ynohtna starts "smoshing" on Nayr's face, prompting Nayr to vomit his tacos on the camera, causing everyone in the audience to be disgusted and, in turn, vomit all over each other. Back at the restaurant, another restaurantgoer sends a flungdinger at the main characters, causing Nehpets to yell at him. The restaurantgoer alerts the group to the approach of flying hippos outside, who are on fire and driving Chevrolet Corvettes — which are decorated with Little Tree air fresheners that are also on fire — at 120 miles per hour. The hippos arrive and shoot lasers out of their eyes, blowing up the restaurant. The camera tries to fade out after the restaurant's destruction, but explodes as well.[1]

In an addendum, the author, CrazyMPSmosh, claims that the pitch is based on a true story involving him and his friends, whose names have been encrypted for "legal purposes." He further claims that people usually vomit upon hearing the film pitch.[1]

History[]

"Inverted Gravity" was an article submitted by Smosh.com user[1] and Staff member Stephen[2] under the username "CrazyMPSmosh" and published on November 14, 2002 at 11:03:58 p.m. in the Movie Scripts category in the website's "Articles" section. According to a note at the end of the article, the story of the article's pitched film was based on a true story involving Stephen and his friends, whose names were encrypted in the article by simply spelling them backwards. The main character, Nehpets,[4] was based on Stephen himself.[2] The other named characters — Nai, Nayr, and Ynohtna — were based on[4] Stephen's friends and fellow Staff members Ian Hecox, Ryan, and Anthony Padilla, the latter of whom was Smosh.com's owner and creator.[2]

The article was the first in the Movie Scripts category as well as the third Smosh.com article overall, published[4] four days after the website's launch[5] and nearly two minutes after the previous article, "The Clueless Happy Boy," which was written by[4] Hecox under the username "PubicSmosh."[2] The next article was "The Long Haired Boy," which was published eight minutes[6] after "Inverted Gravity."[1] The next Movie Scripts article was "Wrestlers," which was published on December 12.[7] Both "The Long Haired Boy"[6] and "Wrestlers" were published by[7] Padilla under his username "WeinerSmosh."[2]

By June 29, 2003, "Inverted Gravity" had been viewed sixty-nine times.[8] By September 16, 2006, Padilla's hard drive failed, bringing the website and all of its content down, including the article. Additionally, his backup drives had been wiped clean with no way of recovering the data, meaning the article could not be officially restored.[3]

Continuity[]

The practice of Smosh.com Staff basing their submitted articles on events they experienced in real life started in the first article published on the website, Hecox's "Oh, the Joys of Puberty," which was published on November 13, 2002,[9] one day before "Inverted Gravity."[1] "The Clueless Happy Boy" established the practice of substituting Staff members' names with original characters, whose names were simply Staff members' names spelled backwards. This started with Nayr,[4] who made his second appearance in "Inverted Gravity."[1] Nayr's friend group also first appeared in "The Clueless Happy Boy,"[4] but Nayr was the only named friend in the group until "Inverted Gravity."[1]

"Inverted Gravity" was the first article to incorporate words[1] from Smosh.com's Dictionary, a page listing unique vocabulary used on the website.[10] Specifically, the article used "smosh,"[1] a word that can be used in place of anything;[10] and "flungdinger,"[1] feces one has stepped in that has been flung off the stepper's shoe.[10]
