Kano is a character on Smosh based on the Mortal Kombat character of the same name. He first appeared in the 2005 video "Mortal Kombat Theme," in which he was played by Anthony Padilla.

Kano (加納)^[1] is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise by Midway Games Inc. and NetherRealm Studios. He first appeared in the original 1992 arcade game,^[5] and has since become a recurring villain in the franchise. He appeared in the 1995 and 2021 live-action film adaptations, in which he was played by Trevor Goddard and Josh Lawson, respectively.^[6]^[7]

In Mortal Kombat, Kano is an Australian mercenary and leader of the Black Dragon, international crime cartel. He is brutal, aggressive, sly, cunning, opportunistic, selfish, and vulgar. He is the archenemy of Sonya Blade. He has a distinctive metal plate covering part of his face, containing a bionic eye implant that is capable of shooting lasers. In addition to his bionic eye, he also typically fights with butterfly knives, a cybernetic heart, elbow blades, grenades, boot blades, Molotov cocktails, and flammable chemicals. His fighting styles include the Chinese martial art Xing Yi and Japanese martial art Aikido.^[8]

Kano's only appearance on Smosh was in the 2005 music video "Mortal Kombat Theme," in which he was played by Anthony Padilla. During the roll call segments, Kano's name was the first to be called, prompting him to jump onscreen while brandishing a knife.^[3] This clip is played twice thereafter during the subsequent roll call segments.^[9]^[10]

On Smosh Games[]

Kano could be seen in recorded gameplay of various Mortal Kombat games in series' Honest Game Trailer.^[11] He appeared in the "Starring" section of the Honest Game Trailer for Mortal Kombat X, in which he was named "Lasik." The name is a joking reference to Kano's bionic eye and its ability to shoot lasers, comparing it to LASIK,^[4] a real-world form of corrective laser eye surgery.^[12]
