ElSmosh is the fifth Smosh channel. The first video, a dub of "REJECTED TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODES!", was released on February 19, 2012. The channel has over 3.6 million subscribers. It was inactive from November 6, 2018 (the day Defy Media shut down) to May 2019, when the channel uploaded a video announcing it would be coming back[1] After being active for almost a year and a half, the channel returned to inactivity on April 30, 2020 before resuming uploads again on March 14, 2022.
History
Under Alloy Digital/Defy Media (2012-2018)
The channel's purpose is to give Smosh's Spanish speaking audience the ability to watch videos in their own language. The channel was used at first to only dub main Smosh channel videos dubbed into Spanish. From February 19 to June 24, 2012, the channel dubbed 35 videos. This first dubbing was made entirely in the United States, and it had the voices of Ernesto S. Bustos as Anthony (called Antonio in this dubbing) and Alfonzo Godinez as Ian (called Juan in this dubbing). The first dubbing was noticeably low-quality and poorly made, having several weird aspects, such as:
- A very weird translation and adaptation from the original videos, where many of the jokes are literally translated, thus losing the original meaning. A clear example can be seen in the video MANSPIDER!, where the "ManspiDERP" joke is translated as "Araña BIZCA" ("Cross-eyed Spider").
- Also, for some reason, a lot of Mexican words were used in this dub, such as "huevón", "pendejo/pendejadas", "chinga/chingadera", "carajo", etc., and translating "bro" as "güey" or "amigo".
- A weird way of pronouncing words, having a notable American accent (though this could be justified since all the voice actors were American).
- Very low-quality microphones, which didn't even have an anti-popping system, which caused the excesive yelling and screaming in the videos to sound very cluttered and lousy.
Even though this dub recieved a mixed-to-positive reception when it first came out, in recent years, it has been flagged out as a low-quality and overall mediocre dubbing.
On July 1, 2012, Ian and Anthony announced that Patricio Maulén, the creator of the channel NeluaMNelu (now Patrick NeluaM), a fan channel that dubbed various YouTube videos including Smosh videos would become the translator, replacing Alfonzo and Ernesto. Ian and Anthony said that ever since starting ElSmosh, fans commented that Patricio would be better suited for dubbing than Alfonzo and Ernesto. Patricio still voiced Ian until Anthony is Leaving Smosh and If Instagram Were Real.
Along with dialogue, titles on the channel are also translated to Spanish.
On December 29, 2012 ElSmosh Pit premiered, a video hosted by Patrick using the style of the series Smosh Pit Weekly. Upon the launch of Honest Game Trailers, Every Blank Ever, and The Big What If, ElSmosh would also dub these episodes as well. The channel stopped uploading videos along with the rest of the Smosh channels in November 2018 due to the abrupt closure of Defy Media.
First relaunch under Mythical Entertainment (2019-2020)
On February 22, 2019, Smosh announced their acquisition by Mythical Entertainment and confirmed the return of ElSmosh. Three months later, on May 10, Ian and Patricio announced the return of regular uploads on the channel, mostly focusing on sketches and Every Blank Ever episodes, beginning with the Spanish dub of EVERY WORKOUT EVER. The channel once again went on a hiatus on April 30, 2020, as Patricio focused on his family.
Second relaunch under Mythical, and Independent era (2022-2024)
On March 14, 2022, Ian announced in a video on the channel that ElSmosh will once again resume regular uploads. He also revealed that Patricio had departed from ElSmosh, ending his stint of dubbing Smosh videos and managing the channel after nearly 8 years. Thus, Smosh hired Luis Enrique Studios, a company based in Argentina, to employ new voice actors to replace Patricio and his team, and to produce new dubbed content for the channel.[2] ElSmosh returned with the Spanish dub of The Coolest Girl in 2007 on March 16, 2022.
The channel then focused on dubbing episodes of Smoffice, Interviewing Exes, RIP- The Funerals, and Every Blank Ever, as well as other sketches. ElSmosh also began to release Spanish-dubbed videos from Smosh Pit and Smosh Games (outside of Honest Game Trailers) for the first time starting with the Beopardy episode, The Hardest Teen TV Trivia Challenge, and the Stan Vs Internet episode, How Many Video Game Movies Do You Know?, respectively.
On June 29, 2023, Patricio announced on his Twitter account that he will reprise his dubbing role as Ian and Anthony, marking his return to the channel after over 3 years. However, with the new company taking charge of production, he is no longer in charge of ElSmosh. Also around this time, the channel reverted to dubbing classic Smosh sketches only, usually uploaded a week after each original release.
After classic Smosh sketches were discontinued on the main channel in favor of the current series, Bit City, ElSmosh once again went on a hiatus, with the Spanish dub of Whatever You Do, DON'T Talk being the channel's final release.
Translators
Each cast member has their own translator. The channel used to credit the voice actors who dubbed the cast members in every episode. However, after the second relaunch of ElSmosh, the voice actors were not disclosed except for Denise R. and Daniel Curao, the voice actors for Courtney Miller and Shayne Topp respectively.
