Bluesky, often shortened to Bsky, is a social networking website based in Seattle, Washington, on which users post and interact with short messages called "skeets", similar to X (formerly known as Twitter). It has gained popularity among users as an alternative website to Twitter, including some people affiliated with Smosh. Despite this, Smosh has yet to establish a presence on the platform.
Bluesky began development in 2019 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey as a research initiative to establish an open and decentralized standard for social media that gives users more control over their experiences and data, with primary funding from Twitter. With Twitter's acquisition by businessman Elon Musk in 2022, the company ended all ties with Bluesky. Still, the latter continued development independently until its launch in 2024. The website has gained popularity among users who view it as an alternative to Twitter, especially after its acquisition by Musk, reaching 20 million users by November of that year.
