Bit City is a sketch-variety series on the Smosh main channel that premiered on August 23, 2024. Created during Smosh's independent era, the show is produced and directed by Erin Dougal and serves as a flagship series designed to showcase the entire Smosh Family ensemble in a centralized, recurring format. Blending the sensibilities of late-night talk shows, classic sketch formats, and improv, Bit City serves as a platform for recurring characters, comedic segments, and experimental new formats.
Description[]
Bit City is a hybrid sketch and variety show created by the Smosh team as a way to feature the entire cast on the main channel following Anthony Padilla's return to the company in 2023.
The series blends traditional sketch comedy with the structure of late-night television. Season 1 featured a variety of comedic segments including recurring bits like Reunions, Couples Therapy, Hot Goss, and Chanse Jumps A Car, with an emphasis on both scripted and improvised material. It was co-hosted by Angela Giarratana and Chanse McCrary, though Chanse’s presence shifted in Season 2 to focus more on performing in sketches rather than hosting.
While Season 1 drew inspiration from Saturday Night Live and late-night talk shows, Season 2 leaned more heavily into an ensemble-based structure and tone. Many Season 2 sketches were written by cast member Tommy Bowe, contributing to a more chaotic and character-driven tone.
Each episode is structured around specific themes and is accompanied by members-only behind-the-scenes content and cut scenes available to Smoshtastic-tier subscribers on YouTube.
History[]
Bit City was first alluded to on June 20, 2024, during a major announcement video on the Smosh main channel. The date marked the one-year anniversary of Smosh's return to independent ownership under Ian and Anthony. In the video, Ian and Anthony teased the development of a major new project—at the time unnamed—that would reshape the structure and output of the main channel. The announcement signaled a creative shift, one that aimed to more equitably show the full ensemble of Smosh performers.
In the wake of Anthony’s return to Smosh in 2023, he and Ian had resumed their signature two-person sketches, a nostalgic return to form for long-time fans. However, this also created a noticeable divide between the original duo and the broader cast that had kept the channel alive during Anthony’s absence. As the sketches increasingly focused on Ian and Anthony, Bit City emerged as a solution—a new show designed to feature the entire ensemble in a format that felt distinct yet cohesive with the brand's comedic roots.
The concept for the show was initially pitched by Shayne Topp. Angela later suggested the title Bit City. The show draws inspiration from the structure of late-night television, Saturday Night Live, and Smosh: The Sitcom Live.
To prepare for Bit City’s launch, the Smosh main channel went on a two-month hiatus beginning in late June 2024. During this break, no new public uploads were posted to the main feed. Instead, three exclusive members-only videos were released, each featuring various Smosh Family members and serving as a quiet prelude to the more ensemble-focused content to come.
On August 16, 2024, Smosh officially revealed the project in a trailer directed by Courtney Miller. This promotional rollout also included a rebranding of the main channel’s avatar and banner to reflect the aesthetics and tone of Bit City. The following Monday, an episode of Smosh Mouth titled "Introducing Your New Hosts" aired, featuring Amanda Lehan-Canto, Angela, and Chanse discussing the new show and teasing what audiences could expect. Then, on August 22, just one day before the premiere, a live Q&A stream featuring Ian, Courtney, Shayne, Tommy, and Anthony was aired on the main channel to build excitement and engage directly with fans.
Bit City officially premiered on August 23, 2024. Its first season consisted of 10 episodes, concluding on December 27 of the same year. Each episode featured a mix of recurring and new comedic formats, while also including behind-the-scenes content and cut scenes for Smoshtastic-tier channel members. Angela Giarratana and Chanse McCrary co-hosted Season 1, though Chanse’s role shifted in Season 2 to focus more heavily on appearing in sketches rather than co-hosting.
Season 2 of Bit City was originally scheduled to debut on January 31, 2025, but was delayed by a week due to the Southern California wildfires that heavily impacted the Los Angeles area. It premiered on February 7, 2025, with a slightly retooled tone and structure. To build hype for the upcoming season, Amanda, Angela, and Tommy participated in a live stream on January 24, 2025.
